About our Gym Platinum Health & Pilates offers a small, personalised gym service that is designed to keep you motivated and ensure you achieve the results you deserve. Our floor is always staffed with personal trainers (except between Monday-Friday 1pm-3pm) who are there to not only train you, but keep you on top of your goals and ensure you have fun along the way. Whilst we can create an individualised program for you, the main focus of our exercise program is based on circuit training principles which research shows is the best way to lose weight in the least amount of time. Our typical circuit sessions are 35 minutes long (including warm up and cool down) and all you need is three sessions per week to see results. Every one minute you alternate between strength & cardio exercises so you’ll never get bored! Why is circuit training so effective?Circuit training aims to keep you working at 70-80% of your maximal heart rate which is the optimum zone to work out in when trying to burn fat. Many people push themselves too hard in the gym thus achieve more aerobic fitness but little weight loss whilst others don’t work hard enough. At Platinum, we aim to make you work in the right zone to maximise your results. A research paper titled “Impact of exercise intensity on body fatness and skeletal muscle metabolism 1994 Jul;43(7):814-8” showed that endurance (cardio) training for 20 weeks will burn 28,661 calories whilst interval training for 15 weeks would only burn 13,614 calories (less than half) BUT the interval training group showed a nine times greater loss in subcutaneous fat than the endurance group (when corrected for energy cost). What does this mean? Well the interval training group lost nine times more fat overall in 15 weeks compared to the endurance (cardio) group in 20 weeks despite only burning half the calories!
